Varieties :
   Phrag. longifolium album
   Phrag. longifolium f. gracile
   Phrag. longifolium var. chapadense
   Phrag. longifolium var. roezlii
Phrag. longifolium var. roezlii f. minutum

Very closely related and sometimes seen as a variety is:
   Phrag. hartwegii
   Phrag. hartwegii f. baderi

Because of the very small differences the next two varieties are at the moment considered to be synonyms of Phrag. longifolium.
   Phrag. dariense
   Phrag. hincksianum

There are also varieties mentioned which are based on a difference in flower colour intensity or the size of the leaves. Some of these varieties are:
   var. latifolium
   var. splendidum

The differences however are so small that it hardly seems reasonable to classify them as separate varieties. (Gruss, 1994)

Etymology : longifolium means having long leaves.

Description
Plant :
Leaves : The leaves are relatively long, tongue-shaped and without a yellow edge.
Inflorescence :
Flower : The staminode is diagonally elliptic and at the lower side almost ending into a point. The upper side is thick with short hairs.

Habitat : The plants grow at altitudes ranging from see level up to 2000 m in almost moist forests. They seem to prefer locations at the edges of streams where they grow on gravel and with moss overgrown rocks and cliffs. In those cases the roots reach into the humus- and moss cushions.

Distribution : Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Ecuador.

Flowering season : In their natural habitat flowering plants can be found all year round.

Chromosomes : 2n = 20 (Atwood, 1981; Wimber, 1983), 2n = 22, 23 (Karasawa, 1980).

History : Phragmipedium longifolium was discovered in the Chiriqui-Mountains in Panama by J. v. Warszewicz. The species was then described in 1852 by H.G. Reichenbach f. and J. v. Warscewicz in Botanische Zeitung 10: 690, 1852 as Cypripedium longifolium. The description was based on a herbarium specimen that was collected by J. v. Warszewicz in Panama and on notes made by the collector of this species.
Later in 1896 when Rolfe created the genus Phragmipedium he included this species.
